Hiking In & Around Cannon Beach

  1. Saddle Mountain Trail: This hike is three miles each way and the highest point is at 3,283 feet.  We recommend allowing at least two hours hiking up and 1 ½ hours hiking down. This is an awesome hike if you would like to see wildflowers! Travel to Saddle Mountain, the highest peak in the north coast range, by taking Highway 26 east to mile post 10. It is a seven mile drive from Hwy 26 to the Saddle Mountain Trail.  This hike is not advised for small children and hiking boots are recommended. This is a fairly difficult hike that is usually open from March to December. Primitive campsites are available. Flush toilets / no showers.
  2. Ecola State Park – Indian Beach Trail: A nice two mile hike from the parking lot of Ecola State Park provides open views of the ocean, off-shore rocks, a myriad of birds and occasional sea lions.  Allow 45 minutes to an hour each way. Ecola State Park is equipped with barbecue and restroom facilities. Indian Beach is the start of the Tillamook Head Trail.
  3. Ecola State Park – Tillamook Head Trail: This hike is six miles each way beginning at either Indian Beach or Seaside and the highest point along the trail is 1,200 feet.  Allow 3 hours for one way of hiking. A trailside overnight camp is available.
  4. Oswald West State Park – Short Sands Beach: This ½ hour hike begins about 10 miles south of Cannon Beach. There are 3 parking lots.  We recommend taking the one on the east side of Hwy 101. This trail takes hikers into a rainforest along a creek that empties into the ocean. Campsites are available, by using the 2nd parking lot, on the west side of Hwy. 101, where wheelbarrows are available for transporting gear. The sites are primitive with fresh running cold water, flush toilets, but no showers.

Park at the first parking lot on the west side of the highway.  This is a gradual hike with ocean vistas, and it is usually open all year.
  6. Arch Cape – (connects to Cape Falcon Trail): On the north side of the tunnel go east.  At this point, you enter Oswald West State Park and a 5 mile stretch to Cape Falcon treats the hiker to the lush coastal rainforest. The trail may be muddy so we recommend wearing hiking boots during the colder months.
  7. Neah-Kah-Nie Mountain Trail: This hike is one mile each way and the highest point along the trail is at 1,631 feet.  Allow 1 ½ hours each way. 9. Short Sands Beach: A half-mile walk through the woods and along a creek leads to Short Sand Beach in Oswald West State Park. This short and easy hike is ideal for families with small children.
  10. Cannon Beach Nature Trail: This trail includes a paved portion on the east side of Elm Avenue, just south of the Ecola Creek Bridge, that follows a bend of Ecola Creek, past wetlands and emerging at 2nd Street at the City Park. A gravel portion of the trail circles the ponds at the east end of 2nd Street and a south spur of the trail passes through a Spruce forest reserve. When the trail emerges from the forest reserve to the south, walkers can continue through a quiet neighborhood along South Elm Street and the trail continues where the road dead-ends, passing through woodlands and wetlands before emerging on East Gower Avenue near City Hall where a paved portion of the trail continues south, emerging on Spruce Street. By continuing to walk south on Spruce Street, walkers can connect to the Haystack Hill Trail at the end of Spruce Street.
